4 things truckers should always keep an eye on

As any driver knows, you have a responsibility to pay attention when you are behind the wheel. But, when you are driving a big rig your responsibility seems to be even bigger as your truck is longer and heavier than the other vehicles on the road. Your full attention is required to ensure that you make it to your destination safely as well as helping to keep the roadways safe for the other drivers.

4 things truckers should always keep an eye on:

  1. Check your mirrors
  2. Scan over your gauges
  3. Keep room between you and the other drivers
  4. Look ahead

Check your mirrors

It is important to know what is going on around you. Check your blind spots as often as you can and keep an eye on the traffic surrounding you and your trailer. Just because you are being safe on the road does not mean the rest of the drivers are doing the same.

Scan over your gauges

Your gauges could help indicate mechanical problems going on within your truck. Don’t look past them as they could cause a breakdown which may, in turn, cause a multiple car accident. Some of the things you want to check are: fuel level, electrical, and overheating. Preventative maintenance is key. Make sure you perform a good inspection before you even head out on your next adventure.

Keep room between you and the other drivers

Maintaining a safety circle between you and the other drivers will help if you run into an accident. Whether it’s heavy traffic, rush hour, construction, a speed trap, etc. things will pop up where you have to slow down significantly. As you know, it takes your rig much longer to slow down than a smaller car. Safety is key in these situations and accidents happen when drivers aren’t prepared.

Look ahead

When you look ahead you are preparing for any possible situation. Like we said before when you pay attention you will notice speed changes, construction, and accidents sooner. Looking ahead helps better prepare you and in an emergency gives you a better idea when rest stops, exits, and weigh stations are approaching. Don’t get caught off guard! You will be happy you stayed focus when emergency situations occur.
