Driving every day can be dangerous, but just like any other job safety precautions are there to help prevent an accident-free job. To help ensure that you are doing everything in your power to make sure that you get from point A to point B safely we put together a list of safety tips that you should apply to your everyday life.
The top four safety tips for truckers:
- Always perform a pre-trip inspection.
- Take breaks.
- Obey traffic laws.
- Have a safety kit in your rig.
Always perform a pre-trip inspection.
Taking the time to perform a pre-trip inspection before every trip and at every stop will help ensure that your rig complies to all requirements that are in place for your safety. Be sure to do a walk-around to check for leaks, low tire pressure, check oil and coolant levels.
Take breaks.
It may seem simple, but taking breaks will help you stay focused and alert while on the road. Driving constantly can make you feel tired so getting out of your truck on a regular basis to walk around, pump gas, or eat will help you stay alert while driving. Prevent drowsiness by doing small exercises like pushups or jumping jacks can help you feel energized and ready to take on the day again.
Obey traffic laws.
Obeying traffic laws is one of the most important parts in ensuring your safety while on the road. Always make sure to buckle your seat belt, drive the speed limit, and stay in the recommended lane. Paying attention to the posted signs will also warn you where construction is, detours, and where truck weighing stations are.
Have a safety kit in your rig.
Your truck will be filled with a lot of things, but make sure one of those things is a safety kit. This kit can be filled with extra tools, flashlights, fire extinguisher, extra batteries, band-aids, water or a blanket if it’s cold outside. Having these things tucked safely away in your truck will help you if you were to get stranded on the side of the road until help arrives.
