3 tips for semi trucks driving on ice:
- Drive slow.
- Be prepared.
- Wait it out.
Drive slow.
You may think you’re a pro at driving by now, but it’s always best to drive slow. With other vehicles on the road and icy conditions, it is really hard to determine just how bad the roads are. You don’t want to be the reason for an accident or a multi-vehicle pileup. It’s also important to note that if your tires are bad it’s important to get them replaced before icy conditions hit. Bad tires make you more susceptible to accidents.
Be prepared.
Preventative maintenance is important when driving, especially in the winter. You want to make sure your rig is running well before heading out. Taking your truck to a trusted mechanic is important to make sure you make timely deliveries. Make sure that your fuel is topped over, your brakes work well, your turn signals are working, and so on.
You may also want to consider bringing along an emergency kit in case you get stranded on the side of the road. Things you may want to pack: winter clothes, boots, blankets, food, long underwear, warm socks, tow strap, and whatever else you see fit.
Wait it out.
In blizzard or icy conditions, it is always best to wait it out. If you are on the road, getting off on an exit where you can find a rest area, restaurant, gas station, or retail store is a great place to take a breather. Driving in conditions where you can’t see the roadways or you’re seeing cars off in the ditch are not good for you and the other drivers. Pulling off to safety may put you back a little bit, but it’s better safe than sorry. You don’t want to risk your life or the lives of the other drivers on the road.
