Whether you are a new or seasoned professional, your truck will be prone to breakdown at some point. But, if you stay on top of your preventative maintenance as you should you can prevent some of these breakdowns from occurring. Just like with anything else preventative maintenance will cost you less and result in less downtime than if you experience a full-fledged breakdown. A breakdown will cost you time and money on and off the road as your problem gets fixed.
The maintenance advice every trucker needs:
- Regular oil changes
- Don’t forget the grease
- How are the tires?
- The radiator
Regular oil changes
This one seems self-explanatory, but even though it may seem like a no brainer it still needs to be talked about. If you have driven a car since you were 16 then you know that you need to change your oil. A lack of oil can result in expensive repairs and it’s a very simple fix. Just simply check your oil levels before and after each stop to ensure you are running properly.
Don’t forget the grease
Your rig needs grease to run properly and this is something you can usually fix yourself. Take the time to look over your rig as you check the areas that may need a little extra grease and you may find something else that needs to be fixed as well.
How are the tires?
If you take care of your tires, they will take care of you. Every tire is different and that means they may have a different PSI level. Be sure that your tires are properly inflated and as you do this you will be able to inspect for possible wear and tear. If you take the time to check your tire pressure you will also save money on fuel when you are running on good tires.
The radiator
Regular inspections of the radiator keep your engine cool. Some things you can do to ensure that your radiator is running properly are: top off fluid levels, watch for leaks, and get repairs done asap before they grow into bigger problems.
