When Should You Replace Your Shocks?

Even with the prep work and maintenance necessary for winter conditions, maintaining your suspension system is no less important. Worn and damaged shocks can result from lack of maintenance and cause serious problems as a result.

We will go over some of the signs that your shocks need to be replaced. The goal is to help your suspension system live longer, function properly, and hopefully give you the smoothest ride. If you haven’t already, be sure to read Air Ride Vs. Spring Ride.

Veering Vehicle in Side Winds

You may believe that it is normal for your vehicle to have veering problem in the wind. If your vehicle begins to veer simply because of a minor gust, this could be because of issues with your shocks. This can obviously create driving issues with having unsteadiness on the road.

Excessive Vibration

Sometimes when traveling on some roads under construction, you may feel your vehicle shaking. This is not always something to be worried about. However, once you return to a smoother road if the shaking persists than you may have a problem. A large percentage of the time, the problem is caused by aged shocks that need to be replaced. When driving at higher speeds on the highway, the vibrations could intensify and become a serious danger to your driving.

Excessive Bouncing

Coil springs are an important part of your vehicle’s suspension. The coil springs in your vehicle are mounted between the wheels and the frame. When you happen to drive over a bump, your car bounces on the coil springs. The shock absorbers stop your vehicle from bouncing nonstop. So basically, if you drive over a bump or hit a rough patch on a road and your vehicle continues to bounce for longer than what seems to be normal, then you may need to look into replacing your shocks.

Issues When Applying the Brakes

All vehicles’ front ends dip forward while applying the brakes. You will know that your shocks are beginning to wear out when your front end begins to dip more severely. When your shocks begin to grow even worse, it can result in swerving while applying the brakes. This can be very dangerous when road conditions are wet or snowy.

Issues with your shocks will not appear overnight. Shocks wear out over a period of time, which can make it difficult to understand when they need to be changed. Worn out shocks can be dangerous and costly if the problem is not fixed soon enough. Don’t forget that NDI is your one-stop shop for getting the job done.
