Winter tips and tricks for semi-truck drivers:

  1. Have the right equipment
  2. Perform preventative maintenance on your truck
  3. Drive carefully
  4. Know the weather conditions

Have the right equipment

Are you ready for winter? It’s important to have all the right equipment in your truck because you never know what conditions you could run into. You will want to make sure you have de-icer and an ice-scraper to remove all the unwanted ice from your windows. You also don’t want to forget jumper cables, a flashlight, a high-visibility jacket, a warm blanket, and warm clothes, food and water, and any other items you feel you may need.

Perform preventative maintenance on your truck

You don’t want to go out on the winter roads without preparing your truck first. Don’t forget to check your tires for wear and to make sure they have the correct pressure. Also, be sure to check your wiper blades, fluid levels, battery, lights, and defrosters. All of these items need to be working at their full potential because if not, they can really be a hazard to you and other drivers if you are on the road.

Drive carefully

Did you know that a high percentage of accidents happen during the winter months? You want to make sure that you are adhering to the rules of winter driving. Driving too fast, wet roads, low visibility, and not enough space between vehicles are all reasons for accidents. It is easy to feel like you are in a hurry and with hazardous conditions causing you to slow down, you may feel more rushed than normal. Despite your lack of time, you don’t want to rush because an accident will slow you down or cause possibly even result in death.

Know the weather conditions

It is important that you are aware of the weather conditions. As you drive, the conditions will change city by city. Be sure to listen to the radio for up-to-date road conditions and possible closures. The more you are aware, the more you can prepare.
